Getting to know you

You all want to hear about my new wheel right? RIGHT?

I think C is so tired of hearing about spinning…poor guy. He is such a good sport.

My new lendrum didn’t spend a lot of time in her box once we were home

lendrum.jpgThis wheel was so easy to assemble! Really really easy. I am so glad that it came out of the box pretty much ready to go…because I sure was. In just a few minutes I had learned the lay of the land and had here ready to go.

lendrum2.jpg

When I bought my first wheel I was just learning to spin. I have never spun on a spindle so while I was learning the wheel I was also learning how I spin…of course that became very intuitive for me and now I am presented with learning a new wheel. My logical side tells me I should learn this wheel inside and out before I just start spinning for the heck of it..my creative side says JUST SPIN ALREADY…so I satisfied them both.

helloyarn.jpg

I chose a very beautiful roving from Hello Yarn to start my spinning with and am taking a calculated approach to exploring Penelope (well yes! I named her.) My plan is to spin 4 oz on each ratio from the bottom up and figure out which ratio give me the best worsted, sport, fingering, lace Yarn. So I have started on the lowest ratio and am working my way up the ladder. I guess I should also mention for non spinners that the lowest ratio is the highest slot on the flier as you can see in the above photo…when you are working your way down the notches you are actually working upward in twists per inch…but enough of that. I have yarn to show you

yarn.jpg

mmm tasty tight twist yarn! I am a bit unhappy with how uneven it is, but I guess that is part of learning a new wheel

yarn2.jpg a sexy yarny pic with laundry in the background just in case you had some crazy notion that I have only been spinning!

This 4oz was finished very quickly…I am now working on another braid on the next ratio up (down)

As you can probably guess a lot of new handspun will be going up into the shop as I keep spinning. I am so excited to share my new spins with you. The first one will not be in the shop…I am not happy with it enough to sell it, but this one I am working on will go up as soon as I am finished!

Then of course in my spare time I made C an apple pie for listening to me talk about spinning, weddings and Rhinebeck 24/7

Now we are both happy!

Rhinebeck The first

I love the Rhinebeck festival..and the town it is in. So much natural beauty….and yarn!

A knitting fair in the fall is just so inspiring, I really look forward to this trip for the absolute beauty of nature.fall-colours.jpgfall.jpg

Of course the people and fiber are amazing! I went this year with a mission…to find the perfect (for me) wheel. It was SO HARD to not buy all the yarn and fiber I fell in love with.

My sweet friend Carissa and new friend Steph took care of the fiber shoping for me!girlg.jpg

They did an amazing job of fiber enhancing…I am usually a big shopper, but these girls put me to shame…I was so proud!

Check out my flickr for more fun with the girls!

I did end up with a few braids of roving and 3 skeins of socks that rock…because I am only human! For anyone who has been to the festival they know that Saturday is just JAM packed with wonderful knitterly people. It was so inspiring to see so many knitters, however I had fiber on the brain and my camera in my bag so I didn’t get too many photos. I did run into Anne and her friend Kim on sunday morning.

As for the wheel search, with the help of Morgaine at Carolina handspun I decided to buy a lendrum. At first I had a lot of hesitation. On the technical side the wheel was everything I wanted and more, however, I was not drawn to the physical lay out of the wheel. I wanted a lady bug…they are so cute! In the end my desire for larger bobbins won out and I bought the lendrum. I am SO GLAD that I did, but more on my excitement later.

Carissa and Steph both had a lendrum and were singing its praises and then as I walked through the festival I started to see them everywhere.

lendrums.jpg

They started popping up everywhere…I just couldn’t get away from them…there were so many at the sheep to shawl  sheep-to-shawl.jpg

They were also a Canadian Made wheel so I was sold.wheel1.jpg

I am so looking forward to getting to know my new lendrum!

Rhinebeck always is a wonderful experience. Too bad it is so short! I am off to unpack my new baby! I will surely keep you updated on getting to know my new girl!

the end of the road

As many of you know, or can tell, I love my wheel. This is the first wheel I ever spun on and she has served me well. However, I feel that it is time to move on to a more technical wheel and so I will be selling my baby.

First I have to say that she is in really great shape. No nicks or dings in her that are noticeable. I also JUST bought the bulky flier and bobins so they will come with her in the price. I paid almost $200 for the bulkies and over $500 for the wheel.

She is a double treadle Ashford traveller with a double drive. There are 4 regular sized bobbins and 4 of the bulky as I mentioned and lots of little extra screws and parts included.

I would really like $450. for her but am willing to take reasonable offers.

wheel.jpg

The wood is all the darker colour…the light just hit the maiden head in the photo.

I will not ship her because I would hate for her to not go back together properly for you. I am happy to do local pick up or I will be traveling to rhinebeck later this month and have no problem dropping her to you.

The band pictured is a polyband which is great for the bulky flier but I will put a cotton band on her for the smaller bobbins.

Call for back up…

Yes, the website is currently down. I have no idea why…my provider is just a wonderfully reliable source. I have been on the phone with them this morning and they said it will be fixed in 24 hours…lovely.

I will make sure to update you all when it is up…I am so sorry that the yarn shopping is unavailable…it really is a crime!

Winners and the blob

Our Wed winner is Linda

And our thurs winner is Manon

Congratulations ladies! I hope you love your prizes!

In amongst all the wedding madness going on around here I did manage to get some knitting done on the handspun shawl and cast it off last night! I really don’t think I could be happier with this shawl.

blob.jpg

Today there will be a bunch of weaving in of ends and hopfully some blocking. Next time you see this baby she will be ready to wear to rhinebeck.

And with the shawl off the needles I figure it is time to cast on the wedding stole. I will keep you updated on her progress!

Oh and I forgot to mention that the Pigeonroof is up.
